LEGO-Crazy! :
Let’s Go Crazy with Lego’s
Monthly Program Series for Tweens (7-12)
Title
The main title is LEGO Crazy, but each month
has a different publicized name which include:
Month 1 Lego Rock Your World
Month 2: Lego and Fly Away
Month 3 Lego Mate, Don’t Walk the Plank
Month 4 Lego and Don’t Look Back
Month 5 Lego and Let Me See Your Patronus
Brief
Description
Every month, the theme for the Lego’s will
change according to the chosen game or creation decided. The tweens will design and build Lego
creations according to the theme and the librarian will take pictures of all of
the creations and post them on the bulletin board in the program room and put a
number by each one. Everyone will vote
for their favorite creation by putting a lego in a cup labeled with that same
number that are located on a table by the bulletin board. Whichever cup has the most amount of Legos
inside it will be the winner. The winner
will not be announced until the end of the program and has to be present to
receive the winning gift. After pictures
are taken of the creations, the tweens be able to take out their frustration
and demolish their designs (no breaking the pieces, just having fun being
destructive). After the creations are
taken down, there will be three stations (2 projectors and 1 television) where
the tweens will be able to play the Wii video game that the theme originated
from. The library will also provide 2 DS
players and two DS versions of the game.
Tweens are encouraged to bring their DS game consoles as well to play
with friends if the other stations are taken.
When the participants are not playing, they can snack on pizza, cookies,
candy, and various drinks. Towards the
end of the program, the winner will be announced and will be given a set of
Legos relating to the video game, a video game, or a similar gift.

Step-by-Step
Instructions
1.
Every
month, the librarian will choose a theme that works with a Lego video game that
will allow for tweens to build various items that relate to the theme/video
game.
2.
The
librarian will set up a table with multiple opaque cups (12-20 depending on how
many people come) by the bulletin board.
There will also be square pieces of paper with numbers written on them
and a sharpie to write the number on the cups.
3.
The
librarian will also bring in two projectors (one from the teen department and
one from another department) and set them up along the longest wall leaving
space for the television in the middle (also from the teen department).
4.
Three
Wii’s will be set up. One will be
plugged into the television and ready to go.
Two other Wii’s (borrowed from staff members), will be on projectors
that are on carts and will be placed aside until the video game portion of the
program begins. There will be 10
Wii-Motes.
5.
The
librarian will also bring in 2 DS Consoles and 2 DS video games and set them
aside until the video game portion begins.
6.
The
librarian will also bring in a camera and an easy small printer to print the
photos quickly. This will be stored away
until the middle of the program.
7.
There
will be two tables along the other wall that will have pizza, plates, napkins,
cups, a bowl of ice, and liters of various drinks and waters.
8.
On the
floor will be four large thin circular carpets where two large boxes of Legos
will be placed. The Legos will be dumped
onto the center of the carpets when the design creation begins.
9.
After 30
minutes, the librarian will go around and take pictures and write down each
participants name down with a short description of their design. That way when the photos are printed, the
name of the participant can be written on the back where no one can see it.
10. While the librarian is printing the photos, the
tweens are allowed to demolish their work however they want as long as they do
not break anything or hurt themselves.
11. Another staff member will be setting up the
Wii’s on the carts to correspond with the projector screens along the wall.
12. The teen librarian will post the photos to the
bulletin board and the other staff member will give each tween a Wii Mote that
corresponds to either the TV or the projectors.
13. The tweens that are not playing can eat. They can also vote on their favorite design.
14. To vote for your favorite design, each person
will grab 1 lego and place it in the cup that corresponds to the number by the
picture that they like the most. People
are only allowed to vote once and staff will watch to make sure no one breaks
the rules.
15. At the end of the hour, the three librarians
will count the Legos from each cup, pull the picture down that was the winner
and read out the winner’s name.
16. The winner will receive a Lego set relating to
the video game, a video game
17. The librarians will then clean up the Legos,
tables, invite staff to eat the rest of the snacks/pizza, TVs, Projector’s,
etc.

Other
Considerations
Registration is not required for this
event. The library will serve pizza,
have candy, and serve cookies. There
will be three staff members including the teen library. One staff member will make sure the voting is
done correctly, count the voting tally, and assist with the food and
drinks. The second staff member will set
up the Wii’s and the projectors, help count with the voting, and clean up
afterwards.
Program
Evaluation/Assessment Tool
A small card table will be placed by the exit
door of the program room. Two large
bowls will be placed on the table with signs above each. The first sign will
say “Did You Have Fun? Put in a Lego?”
The second sign above the second bowl will say, “Want More? Please tell us!” There will be Lego’s on the table as well as
golf pencils and half sheets of papers that say Recommendations on them. This way we can have the teens anonymously
tell us what they would like us to do differently as well as put in a Lego if
they like things the way they are.
